Hong Kong, only about work

Hong Kong, only about work?
I hear one who lives in Hong Kong, will spend 90% of their time working, is it possible to live in Hong Kong and work normally and enjoy the rest of your time? Thank you.

The competition there is a lot greater than the US, so those in Hong Kong who want to get ahead in life really have to work ALL of the time it seems. It's not survival of the fittest but survival of the smartest. As for wanting to work 'normally' and have a good life, working for a global business, like Nikon or IBM is the best bet.
2 :
IF you are that lucky to have such an understanding boss, too bad in HK, it's almost impossible, be it the expats nor the locals. If you find one who really cares about their staff well-being, let me know. Most (shall I say 99.9999%) of the bosses won't care as long as they get whatever they watned on their desk. My other friend, European boss, ask the staff to have all presentations on desk by 0845 the next morning, this request was made at 1845 the evening before. When my friend said she has an urgent appointment, boss said, "of course, by all means go home, just give these to me by 0845 tomorrow morning!!" Forgot to mention, this presentation took about 5 hours to finish. Anyway, most of the staff from this department work from 0845 - 2300, five day a week. Some even has to come back during the weekends, Saturdays & Sundays. One more thing, this is an European company.

How to apply Schengen and UK visa for Indonesia helper working in Hong Kong

How to apply Schengen and UK visa for Indonesia helper working in Hong Kong?
I want to bring our Indonesian helper to Europe this chinese new year because my mom needs to be in wheelchair due to recent sickness. Can we apply for Schengen and UK visa for the Indonesian helper from Hong Kong and if yes, where and how long? Please please help and as much details as possible.

You have to take your helper to the British Consulate in Central to apply for the U.K. visa, as for the Schengen visa, because it would allow you to travel through Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden etc., you have to apply for the Schengen visa at one of the above country's consulate in Hong Kong. It is advised that it is better to apply in the country where you plan to stay the longest but from what I heard, the French Embassy can be difficult. You can also check out this site: http://www.eurovisa.info. Best of luck because Indonesian Passport can be problematic but if you hit a wall in one consulate, go to another one immediately. Best of luck !

live/work in Hong Kong or Japan

live/work in Hong Kong or Japan?
I have really wanted to live in Japan and know alot about the culture and the simple language as well as Haragana. But I know that the Japanese are not too keen for foreigners (nor is any country really but you get the jist) So I was thinking about my career/life to go to Hong Kong as it would be easier for me to speak for they know more English than they do in Japan so I could learn while I'm there. Please help me pick the correct place to set my goals to. This isn't just a fantasy or what ever I have thought this through and I just need help on this part my dreams were already quite crushed but Hong Kong is not too bad. Just have to start again that's all. Please give me a honest but not mean answer please. Thank You Four year degree ? not yet I'm still in high school

Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. Anyone living in HK must have an appropriate income to support themself. A tiny apartment in Kowloon costs HK$10,000 (US$1,300) per month. An equally tiny apartment on HK Island costs HK$20,000 (US$2,600) per month. Foreigners are required to have a long term visa in order to reside to HK. A HK employment visa is only issued to professionals sponsored by their HK employer. Education, skills, and work experience drive the employment decision. Engineers, architects, lawyers, and other professionals may be able find suitable employment in HK. Foreign drifters with no university degree, no professional license, and no money do not belong in Hong Kong.
4 :
If you wanna study oversea, Hong Kong is great! It's true that some appartments are pretty expensive whereas there are also some cheaper choice. The price is just depense on where you live. If you come to Hong Kong for study, I don't think you have to live is a large apartment (some internetional schools has its own dorms for students actually). Some apartments may cost about $5,000-$7,000HKD per month. As you experienced in Japan, Japanese are with strong national consciousness. Most of them are disdained to speak or even to learn English. Thus, you should have a great problem in communicating with Japanese if you're not very good at Japanese. On the other hand, though not all of Hong Kong people are very good at English, most of them can speak base English. Thus, it's easy for you to get into Hong Kong though you can't speak Cantonese or Mandrain. Of course, to experience a local Hong Kong life, you better know some basic Chinese. Here's the link of Hong Kong Immigration Department for information about studing in Hong Kong. Hope it helps. http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/id996.htm
5 :
It might depend entirely on the profession or career of your choice. Anyone can give comparisons for the two places and it would be endless, so perhaps what you would want to do is to narrow down your own career options and see which place has a better chance of improving your skills. One example would be drawing and graphics design, Hong Kong might have some good graphic design companies but Japan is known to be a powerhouse in many animated characters and such creativities. So in this case, I would suggest pursuing a career in Japan. Likewise, you can use this concept.
6 :
Hong Kong is surely more suitable and a convenient place for foreigners. But as you're so much fond of Japanese culture, it's not bad idea to stay there for a while and see how you can adapt to the country. Regarding which place is more expensive, I would say both are about the same.

Yes, there is a big community of American expatriates living and working in Hong Kong. It is a very open city - anyone can live and work here, as long as they can find someone to employ them and arrange for their working visa. Edit: many people are suggesting you learn Cantonese, the local language. It's totally unnecessary. Very few expats speak any Cantonese, and all the locals you need to speak to will understand English. If you want to learn a language, learn Mandarin Chinese instead, because otherwise you won't be able to venture over the border into Mainland China.

How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Hong Kong/Singapore?
How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Hong Kong? How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Singapore? How many years of experience are required for foreigners to work in Taiwan? Thanks! Primarily, the problem is I graduated from college May 2008, so up until now, I only have 1 year of full-time work experience. I believe that China and Taiwan both require 2 years of work exp. for foreigners to qualify for a work permit.

The country's government will give you a work permit as long as you've secured a job in some company. At least that's how it is in Singapore. I imagine the case would be similar in the other countries. From the company's point of view, as long as you fulfil their requirements, they'll be glad to hire you. If you apply for an entry position, of course not much experience is needed. But if you apply for the position of a Director, obviously you'll need lots more experience.

I plan to work in Hong Kong and I am a US permenant resident (not citizen), should I pay tax to the US?
Hi, I plan to work in Hong Kong for a few years and wonder if I still need to pay tax to the US as a permanent resident. For example, the greatest benefit of working in HK is its low rate of income tax. Should I pay additional tax to US government even though I am not a US Citizen and don't reside in the US for a few years? Yes, I wan to come back to the states in a few years for sure so I want to keep my green card. Thanks for your information.

All US citizens and permanent residents are to report their worldwide income. To alleviate possible double taxation, you would be able to exclude up to $91,400 (2009 rate) if you meet all of the qualifications, plus housing, as well as foreign tax credit for taxes paid to HK gov't. Check out IRS Publication 593: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p593/ar01.html

yes it will work, the power supply is multi voltage and will regulate anything between 110v and 240v, others. As to the WiFi you need to be in range of a hot spot or as you say at a friends house. What it does mean is that it will connect to any wireless signal that is unsecured (i.e. has no password to gain access) or to one that you have the password for.
3 :
The Votage requirement can be met using a transformer or if the company supports range of voltages....as for wifi...u need the password for the wifi in the range of ur frnds or anyone else..it is absolutely free,...u can use the programs provided u are in wifi range....

you need to join the yahoo group maganak. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MAG-ANAK/ Ray Bacon will answer all your questions. It shouldn't be a problem. Just petition her as a fiance and she should be here within 4-8 months. That is, unless there is another delay at USCIS again.
2 :
You need to show that this is a valid courtship. When applying for the K-1 visa, you need to show photographs of them dating, wedding plans, e-mail love letters, phone records showing that they have called each other, etc etc. She can try to enter the US by applying for the B Tourist visa, but this can be very difficult to obtain since you need to show that she plans on returning to HK after her visit to the US. If she enters the US on the B Tourist visa, then she can apply for the marriage based Green Card. There is no guarantee that the GC will get approved.
3 :
You could petition her thru K-1 visa. She could be interviewed in the US Embassy in HK but she must be provide police clearance and Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) from the Philippines.Provided that both of you satisfies the requirements for a K-1 visa petition it will not be hard.I suggest you join the Philippine forum in www.visajourney.com as I've known some couples there who are in K-1 visa process whose Filipina fiancees are working in HK.They could give you more insights and experiences as you are in the same situation. Good luck.
4 :
If you're asking how hard it would be to get a tourist visa, then the answer would be pretty hard, especially if the Filipina in Hong Kong was working there as a domestic. It would be hard to show that this person intended to return. But, if you're talking about a fiance visa, then it would be no different than it would be for anyone else.

Yes. It will work in Hong Kong if your phone support GSM1800, but you may experience call problems during rush hours in some places because your phone doesn't have 900 mhz band. normally, they use GSM 900, and GSM 1800 band provides additional coverage. Your phone can pick the best band to help you get best call quality.(if you have a quadband phone, that will be better.)

Hong Kong is not a country.........but a special administrative region within China, therefore it isn't technically dual citizenship.China also doesn't recognize dual citizenship therefore you are technically only a citizen of one country when you are in either.Under no circumstance should you allow the Chinese government know you have US citizenship or it could cause you quite a few issues. You could technically seek out your Hong Kong permanent residency if you desire to do so without issue on the US side.
2 :
hk government allow dual passport as long as you keep having your citizenship registered as hong kong sar / chinese with them

You're not taking a laptop to Hong Kong? If not, then the computers are, more than likely, generally the same name brands as in the US and Canada. The only thing that should be different is the wall outlets they use there, which should just affect how the computers they have are plugged into the wall. If you don't use a wall charger to charge your iPod and use a computer USB port to charge it, you should be fine.

Should I accept a job in Hong Kong (no work visa at fist... must work as tourist)??? HELP

Should I accept a job in Hong Kong (no work visa at fist... must work as tourist)??? HELP?
I was offered a job in Hong Kong after sending my resume. However, I was told that I would be on probation for 3 months, but with no work visa, as a tourist (it is illegal to work as a tourist in Hong Kong) In case the employers want to hire me after the probation period, then they would start processing the work visa. Now, it's a good work opportunity, but I am not sure if it is too risky living and working without a work visa. The salary offered is not too good (about HKD15,000), and they do not cover any expenses related to my rellocation to Hong Kong. Please help so I can decide soon. Thanks!!! 15,000 HKD = 1,800 USD

You might want to ask them if they have any references of people who have done this before. I would bet it is a standard approach for starting a new job there if you are a foreigner, but at the same time, you want to make sure you're not going to be abused in any way. HELLO?!? Ask for references. Also, go online and see if you can find any sites that discuss this topic. I found this one: http://www.goinglobal.com/countries/hongkong/hongkong_work.asp Be sure you can afford to live on the salary they offered. What about medical? If you got hurt, what would you do. All of these things are important to ask BEFORE you accept any job. Good luck!
2 :
15,000 HKD = $2500 approx. - is that per month or per year. If the former, I think you'll coast in Hong Kong. If the latter, stay where you are.
3 :
I totally agree with the first answerer!!!! The company can't buy the ECI - employee's compansation insurance for an illegal worker, but it is by law that they should buy for all of their employees to cover their safety at work. Medical is another issue that you should consider and how about paid holidays? Will they sign employment contract with you even for the first 3 months? HK$15,000 is too tight for you to pay all the bills (rent / transportation/ rellocation / electricity / telephone!), besides, it is illegal, as you know it. Why do you want to take such a bad deal? Proper company won't hire illegal worker, the highest penalty for the employer is HK$350,000 + be sent to jail 3 years, who would take this risk openly? (The immagration department can check you have been in Hong Kong for 3 months as a tourist and would wonder what did you do during the your stay.) What kind of job they offer you? Be careful!!!!

how does renting in Hong Kong work

how does renting in Hong Kong work?
I'm moving out to HK next week for about 6 months so i can travel around Asia, and i'm trying to find somewhere to rent. my friend has told me that there's a minimum 12 month contract period with most places, which i thought wouldnt be so bad because all i would lose would be my deposit, although i've been told that's possibly not the case. her boyfriend said only people with a HK ID card can rent, so they would have to rent for me, and if i left, they would have to pay until the contract period is over - is this true?
China - 6 Answers

Well, I'm not sure about how the rent is, because my manager does it all for me. But I know that the living space is very crammed and very pricey. Also, if you are planning on living in an apartment, be prepared for those pesky cockroaches. Sorry I didn't help much.
2 :
Either HK ID or a valid passport to prove you are not an illegal immigrate
3 :
You need a visa to stay in Hong Kong for longer than your visa-free admissible period. For an entry visa application for residence in Hong Kong, you need to provide the following :- * an application form ID(E) 936, with relevant parts duly completed and signed; * evidence of the sponsor's financial standing, e.g. bank statements, savings accounts passbooks, tax receipts and employment certificates; * evidence of the applicant's financial standing; * evidence of sponsor's relationship with the applicant, e.g. marriage certificates, birth certificate, family photographs and family letters (with envelopes), census record book and Privilege Card for Single Child (if applicable); * evidence of sponsor's accommodation, e.g. rental receipts; and * evidence of the applicant's past residence in Hong Kong (if any).
4 :
Renting your own flat would be pretty tough for 6 months. I am not sure of where your comfort zone lies, but one feasible option would be to rent a room. Usually for about 300-400 USD per month you can rent a very small room in a flat. You share the bathroom, kitchen, and living room with the other renters. The real advantage is that you can negotiate a monthly lease and you will have a place to leave your stuff while you are out of town. Another great thing is that these places are in central locations. Causeway Bay has a ton of rooms to rent. A friend of mine lived that way for 5 years and loved it. Another temporary solution could be a guest house. Again, Causeway Bay has dozens of these. They usually charge about $20 - 30 USD per night, though you could likely negotiate a much lower monthly rate. One that I checked out before was called the Bin Ma Guesthouse. It was clean and the rooms had their own bathrooms, tv's and mini-fridge. These might actually be the best option for you because they require no contract and are furnished. If you are brave, I suggest you wing it out here without a place to stay, take the train from the airport and catch the MTR to Causeway Bay. Get out at Times square and walk north. Start looking up because all the signs for Guest houses are on the second floor. Drop your bags off and stay there for a night. The next day walk around and find a better cleaner place and negotiate prices for a longer stay. I am sure you will find a good clean place to stay a heck of a lot cheaper than a hotel or even room renting.
5 :
Yes you need a HKID Card. Why don't you get a cheap service apt? You can rent some for 10 - 12k a month HK$.
6 :
or you may consider living in budget hostel if you don't need to cook/kitchen. I would recommend USA Hostel in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hi, i would like to know does this cell phone work in those places. it is LG shine KE970.

Yes but you need to go to a china phone company like China Telecom and get a SIN card to put in it. CHEAP maybe a couple hundred RMB. As long as you have the sin card your fine.
2 :
If it is an unlocked tri-band or quad-band phone, it will work in China and Hong Kong. Single or dual-band phones don't work in Asia. You will need to buy local SIM cards (different for Hong Kong and China) but that is not difficult to do. Good luck!

I'm from the Philippines too, if you go to hong kong you can buy a local version or a US version of the 360. Your games will be dictated by the region of your xbox. Also your Xbox live and game points will depend on which region box you get. I got US and get my points online. Games are available locally at datablitz. I do recommend the US version, more games available quicker too.

Of course, there is a very big expat community here. There are americans all over the place, they seem to love hong kong and the convenience of living in a small crime free city.

Anyone can
3 :
Sure & it's a fun place to live.
4 :
Why not? Hong Kong is a nice place and welcome different kinds of culture ppl to come. Why do u want to live and work in HK?
5 :
Sure you can, but you need to be able to get a work permit which enables you to work and live in Hong Kong with the proper visa, and to get a work permit, you first need a job. Most jobs are protected meaning they are only available to Hong Kong citizens, but depending on your experience and skills there are many jobs available, especially with foreign multinational companies. It's not like you can just show up and apply for a job, but this website should give you some insight into what it takes: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4_2.htm This is another good website to have a look at: http://www.hongkong.alloexpat.com/hongkong_immigration/preparing_visa_application.php, Good luck.

Sure you can.Hong Kong is a very unique place. You'll never regret it.

You need a letter of invitation from an employer and a work visa in order to work there. You also need a medical exam after arriving.

will my US appliances work in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is 220v ! Better to buy new things there if you're staying there very long.
2 :
Well things like phones and computers have adapters that can work on any voltage around the world. However things like hairdryers and kettles will work on the 110V US supply and Hongkong uses a 220 British powersupply. The weight limite on flights adds up pretty quickly so you won't really be able to take too much. Hong Kong is a free port and you have lots of different products are very cheap prices.
3 :
Not only that the voltage is different in Hong Kong but also the plugs, Hong Kong's are 3-legs while the US are 2 so you need to buy a socket that could fit both ends.
4 :
Leave your appliances in America. Hong Kong has different voltage and plug configurations than the United States. You will need to buy voltage converters and plug adapterss for everything if you bring them to Hong Kong. Trust me, it's too big of a hassle for a $30 hair dryer.
5 :
No,I do not think so, Hong Kong the voltage is 220V,while USA is 110V.

Anything is possible, but you are aware that our economic hardship is effecting the rest of the world. It is a global recession. Jobs in some fields are scarce everywhere. Figure out what you want to do. See if there is a job market for that particular trade. If so, get training and go for it. Learning the language would be a requirement I'm sure.

well,i think it depends on what kinds of work you wanna get? There are different kinds of level jobs, seldom foreigner especially white guys would do the cheap jobs such as like seller, taxi driver etc,but i think it's not so hard for them to get a job here as long as u r a native speaker,u could work as a English teacher, that's the very popular job for foreigners, and some school or teaching associations would love to hire foreigners to teach students. Why not Guangzhou, there would be more job opportunites, and there are a lot foreign trade company, coz i am here now.Good luck.

Yes, phones purchased in Hong Kong can work in US, but only with GSM providers, such as AT&T and T-Mobile. Also, if you buy a smart phone, the 3G band on your phone purchased in Hong Kong will not necessarily be compatible with the 3G bands on AT&T or T-Mobile. Otherwise, the phone can still use the slower 2G or 2.5G internet connection.

A domestic helper? Is that like a maid? You wont get any immigration visa with that job. Maids are NOT in demand in Canada Now if you are a caregiver - if you are looking after babies and young children or the elderly - then you MIGHT be able to get a job and a visa, but you will still have to qualify with all the required education and experience. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/caregiver/index.asp

It is quite hard to get a working visa to HK since the government has a policy of prioritizing their citizens. It can be a long process, but it's not impossible. The best way to get one is to find an employer first. They are the ones who will then sponsor you and file the application for the working visa. In Hong Kong it is 15,however many countries make a distinction between light and hazardous work, with the minimum age for the former generally being 12, for the latter usually varying between 16 and 18. ILO conventions adopt this approach, allowing light work at age 12 or 13, but hazardous work not before 18. The ILO establishes a general minimum age of 15 years, provided 15 is not less than the age of completion of compulsory schooling. This is the most widely used yardstick when establishing how many children are currently working around the world.

Your question does not make sense. anyway, you need to check with the chinese embassy about the appropriate visa to visit mainland China.
2 :
US passport holders must have the Chinese visa,in your case a multiple entry, for travel to Mainland China, you will not be issued a visa at LoWu border crossing . Chinese visa office in Hong Kong: Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The PRC. 5th Floor, Lower Block, 26 Harbor Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. Tel: 25851657, OR, 25851680, 25851794 Note: 1) You need to go there Monday to Friday during business hours. 2) "Within One working day" means: the visa should be processed within 24 hours "Fast Process" means: the visa should be processed the same day. Requirements to obtain a Visa in Hong Kong A. 1 recent passport photo. B. Passport which needs to be valid at least more than 3 months. C. Call the office before your visit. A China Tourist and Business (F) Visa can be obtained easily in Hong Kong. It can be obtained with the help of a travel agent but at least 3 full working days should be allowed for this procedure. Obtain visa at CITS (H.K.) Requirements A. One recent passport photo B. Passport, which needs to be valid at least more than 3 months and have a full empty page inside passport. C. CTS (H.K.) can obtain tourist visa type only. CTS (H.K.) 3 :
Visa from any bank. But note is better.
4 :
You only need a Visit/tourist VISA. There is a multiple entry VISA that is valid for 1 or 2 years, and you can enter China for multiple times. As long as you don't need to overstay, and you are not planning to work in China. This should be good for you.
5 :
If you are staying in Shenzhen, you can get a restricted visa that permits you to stay only in Shenzhen - you will not be allowed to leave the city unless you are returning to HK. These visas are much less expensive than the visas you need to leave Shenzhen. Because Shenzhen is a SAR and borders HK, these special arrangements have been made.
6 :
Joe said everything. A few of the wrong other replies: Longest visa you get nowadays is 6 month. Most travel agent will not handle USA passports USA passports can not get a visa at the Lowu border USA passports can not get the special 5-day Shenzhen visa. The visa office in Wanchai is for you the place to go. OK, longest visa is 6 month, but if you are a permanent HK resident you can apply for a 3 year visa - or apply for an APEC business traveller card that also lasts for 3 years.

Whether or not a phone will work depends on the type of network the phone can be used on, the frequency the your network uses, and whether or not your phone has a software lock. Type of network can include GSM, CDMA, and TDMA. You may have heard the term quadband, meaning that phone can take four different frequencies (850/900/1800/1900). Software locks are done by service providers to prevent that branded phone to be used on a different network. These phones can typically be unlocked. Basically, you'll need to find out what specifications are needed by the UK service provider and then buy a phone that matches those specifications.

Company Structure Foreign companies that rush into the China market often make two common mistakes: first, entering China without a carefully planned risk mitigation strategy and secondly, failing to develop an exit strategy for the worst case scenario รข€“ the death of a venture. There are many implications in going directly into China, these include: * Exposure to potential legal and financial risk arising from Chinaรข€™s tight monetary controls; * Entrapment in complex and unfamiliar corporate compliance procedures; * Trying to keep up to date with the forever changing laws; or simply * Repatriating profits out of China. With no exit strategy, companies may find themselves waiting months or even years to rationalize assets and repatriate capital. Many companies are stunned by heavy taxes which could have been avoided with appropriate early tax planning to minimize liabilities both in China and in the home country. Both large and small companies face similar risks, although large multinational corporations tend to have greater financing capabilities and therefore a larger tolerance for bearing such risk. This unfortunately is not the case for the majority of SMEs.A wrong move may mean a very expensive and time-consuming fix. Nevertheless, regardless of whether an investor in China is a large multinational corporation or an entrepreneurial SME, the question remains, why take unnecessary risks, when these can be mitigated? Foreign investors have a number of options available when deciding on the type of FIE they use to establish a presence in China. Different FIEs provide varying levels of flexibility and enable the business to conduct a broad spectrum of commercial activities in China. A business decision on which investment vehicle to use should effectively be centered on its intended commercial objectives and the industry sector in which the business is engaged. The more commonly used types of FIEs available in China and the relevant capabilities and restrictions of each are outlined on our China company structure page. The 1st Answerer is rightly said, Hongkongers are generally nice and kind-hearted although on the surface they dont initiate "friendliness" as most people of larger cities. Hong Kong and the Mainland China is very different, people's attitudes and mentality towards work and business are much closer to the West. This makes Hong Kong a perfect blend of the East and West, out in the business and work environments, people follow the rules and regulations just as people in the West do, ie no undertable dealings as so often happened in the Mainland. At home they practise confucianism in respecting the elderly and closely knitted family ties. The nicest thing about Hong Kong is that you could live like a king being surrounded by all sorts of luxuries and clubbing. At the same token there're many affordable apartments rentals, restaurants and shops to choose. There's always something that suit your budget. Check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy!

I myself live in Hong Kong I'm just in America to see my sister. I might be a little young to answer this and I hope...my English isn't too messy to confuse you. Hong Kong generally is a crowded place. We live in apartments often located above shopping centers. Working technically means beating the subway to whatever location your work place is. Its a good place to live an generally people are nice. But the problem is the amount of people. I have to go to school in the early hours and I get squished a lot. But working in Hong Kong shouldn't be a major problem. If you live there you will have to get used to smaller spaces because my apartment is about three rooms including bathroom. Technically it wouldn't be difficult if you get used to it. One more thing, in Hong Kong the summers are really hot. Like, really hot. Right now I'm in Las Vegas but Hong Kong is much more hot. Also it rains a lot so always bring along an umbrella. I have no idea why I went off topic to the weather. But you will enjoy it. Lots of entertaining places and shopping centers. Good Luck if you're considering moving there.

As an American born and raised in HK until I left for the US for university at 18, YES. it is a GREAT place to work. If you've never been to asia, its a great place for you to get acclimated, as it has a very cosmopolitan east-meets-west atmosphere. It's cleaner than most cities in Asia, especially those right across the border in China. Also, it has very relaxed visa policies for many countries, and really has a lot to offer when it comes to cultural activities, freedom of speech and expression, liberal laws, an excellent police force, a SWAT team trained by british special forces (Special air service trained the SDU), a legendary nightlife, and just so much to do. The people are great too. I'm just humouring myself here.

Would a "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows" made in Hong Kong work for me

Would a "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows" made in Hong Kong work for me?
I don't want to have to pay $30 for either a wired controller or the receiver itself. And on eBay, sellers in Hong Kong have them cheaper (about $11-$15). But i bought my 120gb hard drive for 360 from Hong Kong, and it lacks a specific driver or component or code that would allow me to play original 360 games.. so I am skeptical that this wireless receiver from hong kong would work properly or even be compatible with my american made PC, 360 controller, and PC games.. >>EDIT<< "But I bought my 120gb hard drive for 360 from Hong Kong, and it lacks a specific driver or component or code that would allow me to play original >>>Xbox<<< games..." I meant games like Halo 1 and 2 and other games from the original Xbox. It's a known issue, it's because it's not made by Microsoft. So I don't know if the wireless gaming receiver would work or maybe be missing something like that.

most stuff that is "original" is made in hong kong in the first place. the problem with your hard drive is very suspicous i agree, but it is always a gamble with cheap stuff from ebay. the problem here is really: either take the gamble and buy cheap but take the risk of broken/not working items; or: buy it more expensive from a local retailer and have a product that works. my solution: you can always look out for used recievers. they might be just about the same price as the ones from china. alternatively you can buy a wired controller. it can be used or not "original" xbox and still work with your pc. i have a speedlink (xbox layout) controller for my pc games and that one works nicely. i payed just about 10รข‚¬ for it hope it helps cheers

The general consensus is that all PS3s have a built-in voltage converter so in that regard all you should need is a PS3 power cable for the Hong Kong outlets. However, it never hurts to buy a power converter to be safe. Its a $400+ machine after all. EDIT: Have a look at this. http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=68988 It should work the way it is. In addition to the link, I have only seen success stories and not stories of failure regarding the built-in power converter issue. You'll only need a different power cable or plug adapter if the current PS3 power cord doesn't fit into the Hong Kong outlet. You don't need a power converter of any sort.

Why won't my Nintendo DS AC adapter work in Hong Kong

Why won't my Nintendo DS AC adapter work in Hong Kong?
I've been in Hong Kong for a few days now, and still can't manage to get my Nintendo DS charger to work on these wall outlets, in spite of having an adapter for it. While my other electronics seem to work when plugged into the wall adapter (computer, shaver etc.), the charger for the DS doesn't seem to work. Can someone tell me why, or how to fix this? Also, if it matters, the Nintendo DS and charger are originally from Canada.

if you are going stay in hong kong longer, you can go to wan chai computer center and get an adopter or ask from hotel reception.but i don't know why its not working.probably some thing wrong with nds plug .

Is your charger a 110 v or 220? If it's not 220 and you didn't use your converter (not just an adapter), it could be you've fried the electrical system. Most computers have built in converters (I don't know about shavers), but you have to check each electrical appliance to see if they have the same converters built in. Good luck! (If it's been "fried" you'll need to get something replaced. It's been a while since this has happened to me, but it can be repaired. You'd need to take it to a gaming place or someone that can tell you what the problem is.)

Is your adapter 110 or 220VAC? Switching power adapters are often "wide input" and can handle 90-240VAC. Just check what's written on it. Also worth to mention that adapters here quite lousy and often the contact is really bad, or you have no contact at all. Move your charger around in the adapter and check if it gets power in any particular position. Or bring your charger to a shop and let them find any suitable adapter for you. They are about HK$10 per pcs.

it doesnt work because in the worls the power outlets use less energy. and in hong kong the outlets have more energy so the nitendo ds wa made for lower energy
