I was offered a job in Hong Kong after sending my resume. However, I was told that I would be on probation for 3 months, but with no work visa, as a tourist (it is illegal to work as a tourist in Hong Kong) In case the employers want to hire me after the probation period, then they would start processing the work visa. Now, it's a good work opportunity, but I am not sure if it is too risky living and working without a work visa. The salary offered is not too good (about HKD15,000), and they do not cover any expenses related to my rellocation to Hong Kong. Please help so I can decide soon. Thanks!!! 15,000 HKD = 1,800 USD

You might want to ask them if they have any references of people who have done this before. I would bet it is a standard approach for starting a new job there if you are a foreigner, but at the same time, you want to make sure you're not going to be abused in any way. HELLO?!? Ask for references. Also, go online and see if you can find any sites that discuss this topic. I found this one: http://www.goinglobal.com/countries/hongkong/hongkong_work.asp Be sure you can afford to live on the salary they offered. What about medical? If you got hurt, what would you do. All of these things are important to ask BEFORE you accept any job. Good luck!

15,000 HKD = $2500 approx. - is that per month or per year. If the former, I think you'll coast in Hong Kong. If the latter, stay where you are.

I totally agree with the first answerer!!!! The company can't buy the ECI - employee's compansation insurance for an illegal worker, but it is by law that they should buy for all of their employees to cover their safety at work. Medical is another issue that you should consider and how about paid holidays? Will they sign employment contract with you even for the first 3 months? HK$15,000 is too tight for you to pay all the bills (rent / transportation/ rellocation / electricity / telephone!), besides, it is illegal, as you know it. Why do you want to take such a bad deal? Proper company won't hire illegal worker, the highest penalty for the employer is HK$350,000 + be sent to jail 3 years, who would take this risk openly? (The immagration department can check you have been in Hong Kong for 3 months as a tourist and would wonder what did you do during the your stay.) What kind of job they offer you? Be careful!!!!
