I want to work in Hong Kong

I want to work in Hong Kong?
Hello, I want to work in Hong Kong in the near future. I am a HK citizen but living in Canada. Is that possible or do I have to perform some special routine?? Can I just go back and find a place, then look for a job. How does it work?? I find that the job market is very competitive.

If you are a citizen there... there is no special procedure... just find a place and find a job
2 :
I heard it is beautiful, go for it!!!!!
3 :
go ahead ! who is stopping you ?
4 :
If you are a citizen, you are ahead of me in this category especially if you have a strong background in finance, business, administration, trade, etc. Finding a place is tricky, and the job market is indeed very competitive although there is no shortage of well paid job if you are qualified. Check the job section in the South China Daily, it's thicker than the job sections of all Canadian newspaper put together.
5 :
I live and work in hong kong ,Its very nice here and if you want to come to stay you need to think about 2 important things .the income and the type of the work . hong kong is not like before anymore..
6 :
If you have a HK permanent ID card, you just need to go back and look for a job. It is competitive but currently, prospects are good, particularly if you are in finance/accounting or IT

Can I work in Hong Kong only speaking Mandarin, not Cantonese

Can I work in Hong Kong only speaking Mandarin, not Cantonese?
Hong Kong is my all time favorite place. I would LOVE to work there. I'm a White American, currently studying International Relations. I used to live in Taiwan, so I can speak Mandarin very well, almost fluently. I'd love to work in Hong Kong doing... well... something. However, do you think I would need to speak Cantonese? Or, are there a lot of Chinese/Taiwanese companies over there that I could work with?

Actually, how well you speak a Chinese dialect isn't an issue. The only way that someone who isn't a citizen or permanent resident can get a job in Hong Kong is if they can offer a job skill that isn't available in the general population. And that job skill is almost always being a native-English speaker. You also would have to be offered a job before actually moving to Hong Kong. Getting a job isn't as easy as moving there and dropping off résumés, unfortunately.
2 :
You won't die even if you don't speak Cantonese in Hong Kong, but this brings you lots of inconvenience. There're mainland companies which will bring you opportunities but in HK, most people are not really that good at Mandarin. They only know some basic conversations. It feels much more comfortable if you can talk with them in Cantonese. Most of them can speak more English than Mandarin. LOL!!! Of course, as an American, speaking fluent Mandarin already brings you advantages, so try to contact some companies you want!!! Good luck!!!

I have a laptop, printer, monitor, and external hard drive that I will use regularly. so far my computer seems to be working just fine using a power adapter but I'm sure I need to be doing more. We also have a four lamps (one floor, three table) that we'd like to use.

There are two types usaully, one is just a adpater another has a transformer built in to step voltage down from 220 to 110... Be very carefull plugging anything in without the step down transformer. Most laptop p/s have autoswitching to 220volt, be sure to check all other items. Usaully a voltage range is printed on the plug. Most of asia uses the 3 square prong style.

Will my USA curling iron work in Hong Kong?
I need a curling iron for my hair as I will be in Hong Kong several weeks.

Yes
2 :
Get a power converter they use a different plug in get the adapter for it and they probably use 220v so go to office max or something and pick it up
3 :
No, you have to fly all the way to USA just to curl your hair
4 :
Hong Kong has different voltage and power plug configurations than America. You will need an adapter plug and an electric current converter.
5 :
HK uses different voltage and has different type outlets than the USA. Note that appliances like curling irons typically don't work well on another voltage, even if you use a voltage converter. Better is to just buy a curling iron locally. An alternative is to buy a dual-voltage curling iron before leaving home. You still need a plug adapter, but you may need one anyway if you are taking other electrical items that work on any electricty - such as a laptop. http://shopping.yahoo.com/search?p=dual%20voltage%20curling%20iron http://www.adaptelec.com/index.php?main_page=document_general_info&products_id=236
6 :
Hi There, The voltage here in Hong Kong is 220V, and we have different plugs as well. If your curling Iron says it is dual voltage, you can use it here in Hong Kong as well. To be completely honest though, Hong Kong is a technology haven, and it might make more sense to pick a curling iron here as well. And things are quite cheap here as well. There are a lot of stores where you can get one. Fortress: http://iluv.hk/shopping/electronics/62-fortress Broadway: http://iluv.hk/shopping/electronics/61-broadway You can find these stores in almost every single street corner here. Where will you be staying? which area? Hope this helps Ciao

You will need to buy an adaptor/converter - spend a little more & get a good quality universal one. Available anywhere travel-related goods are sold, major department stores and good electrical retailers.
2 :
They have better quality tv's and ditigal signles so that they get better pictures and graphics on there programs, than we do in the united states. We have the on of the poorest quality reception in the world
3 :
Hong Kong is on 220v so you will need a step up - step down converter. The biggest problem is that Hong Kong is on the PAL system and the US is NTSC and this will probably make your TV unusable in Hong Kong.
4 :
Most electrical appliances, including tv's, are not operable in foreign countries without some adaptation. You will save money by selling the tv you now have and purchasing another in Hong Kong.
5 :
when you factor in the shipping, the cost of a good quality voltage converter, and the fact that it might still not work properly due to the different systems, you better get a new one in HK.
6 :
You may need to buy a new one in HK
7 :
i am sure it will work well in HK - but u can buy a new one in HK in a very cheap price... enjoy! HK is really a nice place... try Dimsun here as your first meal...haha
8 :
No, it isn't going to work. California tv is NTSC, and Hong Kong is PAL
9 :
It should work ok, most TV's can display NTSC and PAL format. Only problem is that the voltage here is 240V 50Hz, and in the States its 110V 60Hz so you will need a step-up converter.

Can EU national work in Hong Kong, Singapore or Mainland China

I recently graduated from a US university with a finance degree. I have had a tough time getting jobs or interviews here in the USA because 90% of the openings automatically won't consider anyone without a citizenship or a green card. I lived in China for some years and was wondering what the visa rules are there. Is it the same situation there for foreigners? Thanks!

Probably the same as anywhere else....8-9:00 for office jobs...just guessing.
2 :
usually 9-6 daily... some offices off at 5:30pm. some 5 days work only Mon - Fri. but most of us working 5 & a half days. means 1/2 day on Sat 9-1. nowadays, some offices try flexi working hrs. like the Adidas in HK. their HR wil allow them to like back at work 8am / can off at 5pm. anyway, just add up 9 hrs after u back to work. u can even back to work at 10am / then u off at 7pm....

Well different companies differ from each other. I know my mum who is a fashion design director of a children's clothing brand go off to work as early as 7 and as late as 10:30ish? Everyone there speaks English. You'll only run into a few that don't. It's British there. I'm there 2 times a year. I absolutely love it. Thank god for Hardrock! I'm not too much of an eater like them so I go to the American places which there are a lot. Now, your industry may involve you jumping on the boat to China right there so learn the language and have a great time. It's the most beautiful city at night I have ever been to. Can't say enough about the place.

just work hard for your dreams and you will surely get it! go

You wont, but you would. You never know, but if you cant speak chinese and does not have first hand point of view on market, what can you do? What make you thing you can win in the competition? What can you do better than any others who can speak chinese?? Learn the chinese from Hong Kong movies and your parents from today. Learn to write when you are over sea in chinese city. About living in Hong Kong, you wont have trouble. Because every sign in public has english as well as chinese. If you want to live in China, that will be a bit more difficult as the public provide little language help, plus will be harder for you to get a job due to language barrier. I am a chinese from Hong Kong, information shall be reliable.
4 :
You might face difficulty if you do not speak their language. I heard from friends ppl who know a few languages can find job pretty easily, and for the jobs, i mean the decent jobs. But i also have met some foreigners who speak fluent cantonese. I suppose you can start learning the languages through watching their series. I learned that way and now i have no problem communicating in simple cantonese.
5 :
If you obtain enough of the proved of your fashions knowledge's, and working experienced, that may have a chance. There so many classifieds and informations of working in HK on the net and papers, Side of note of speaking language, if you insisted, you will find yourself you want to learn well about Cantonese and Mandarin hard. Good Luck!

Most places they speak English and you are doing just fine with that.

Yes they need work visas. Internships are usually viewed as temporary jobs so it's not unusual that the company won't sponsor you a visa. Employers would want longer period of stay within the company to maximize the visa application.

Unfortunately all the accountant positions in Hong Kong require good command of English and Mandarin, or Good command of English and Cantonese !!! There are opportunities available, though they might be limited to senior positions - where Cantonese/Mandarin isn't a prerequisite. No. Im not even sure if it will work.there are different formats of games for different countries. and ebay is stupid :b Nevermind. I though ps3 games weren't region free because ps2 ones were. But that doesn't mean I'm an idiot.
2 :
papahet is wrong at least 99% of PS3 games are region free meaning you can play any game from any country on your English PS3 or American PS3 etc... there are some games that are region locked though(like Demon's Souls that you would have to buy the game that matches your region).
3 :
of course they would, don't listen to the idiot above or below me.. lol. ps3 games are region free, meaning all ps3 games of different regions will work, just like the old school Gameboy Games. :D However, DVD's, ps2, (if compatiable), and ps1 games ar NOT region free. You will need a system of the region. Im not sure about the subtitles and the english case... the game is from a different region.. remember, English in not a universal language.. but it's getting thier so you maybe surprised. :D

Before SSBB released I had a few friends who played the japanese version on their Wii's so i'm thinking it should work for you
3 :
You'll need to either modchip your wii (expensive, voids your warrenty) or buy a freeloader. This will let you play games from other regions on your US wii. Available Here: http://www.jr.com/datel/pe/DTL_DUS0264_hy_I/

HOog Kong is NOT part of the Nintendo Big 3. Most likely, Hong Kong gets PAL Region Games. It should work, but check the box. If it says i-Que Wii, then you got a problem. I'll explain. There are 3 regions Nintendo Supports: Nintendo Of Japan (Big N) Nintendo Of America Nintendo Of Europe There is another that covers not-so-important countries, called Nintendo PAL Then, there is Nintendo of China, but due to goverment restrictions, they operate as i-Que (Nintendo of China) You should be able to find at least a PAL Copy because Hong Kong is a Special Zone in China and operates almost as it's own international country, but still anexed by by China. My Name isn't I H8 Wii, I love the Wii, I'm just doing a litttle "test" -Real Name is Hyp64

What should I ask for now that my company is sending me overseas (Hong Kong) for work

What should I ask for now that my company is sending me overseas (Hong Kong) for work?
My company (headquartered in Boston) is going to be sending me to work in Hong Kong for the next 2 years. Are there any perks I should ask them for (airline tickets, cell phone, laptop, chinese language lessons) before I agree to go?

Ask for anything you can think of, especially a raise for the increase in your cost of living. Relocation Language lessons Aid in finding housing etc.
2 :
Don't agree to anything until you have decided what exactly it is you want from them. Like for them to pay your phone bill each month, because calling home from Hong Kong can be very costly. A first class trip back home to Boston every 6 months, and your internet fees. These are just for starters.. But then you wouldn't be able to pay me enough to work in Hong Kong.
3 :
I have been abroad several times on work assignments. Your company should be providing the following: 1) Hotel accomodation whilst you get permament accomodation. 2) Help with finding accomodation, schools etc, for you and family if taking them as well. 3) You will probably need a maid in Hong Kong - this is cultural and helps you survive in a foreign culture. 4) Office space 5) Per diem if expenses are more in HK 6) Help from a native in settling in, getting a bank account etc. 7) Some flights if leave your family at home. Of course they will fly you and your effects out there. Hong Kong is a wonderful place and you will probably work using English. Your maid will help you with the very Chineese stuff. It's a privalege and a good boost to your career. Enjoy it!
4 :
Ask for it all. The old saying, "If you don't ask, than you know the answer" I would ask for: Cell phone charges to be paid Hotel accomodations or other living arrangement allocations Language lessons are a must Interpretation assistance Rental car assistance or a company car.

Hong Kong is a beautiful vibrant city with tons of culture. Many people speak English. It is very international. I would go if given this opportunity, it is frequently a way to move up in corporations, and a great way to see the world. This is what I would ask for: - You must have a company charge card. - First I would ask for a "pre-trip" of about 2 weeks to check out the city, see if you like it, find a place to live there, get used to the food, etc. Make it 2 weeks, not 1, because you will be jet-lagged at first. Fly Business Class, stay at the Conrad Hotel in Central. If they want to fly you coach and put you up at a second rate hotel, tell them to forget about it. - Then ask for 3 to 4 weeks back at home to pack your things, visit family and friends, and get your "stuff" prepared for an extended leave. - A local cell phone is a must, as is a wireless laptop. - All transportation must be Business or First class air. No coach. The flight(s) from Boston will take 16 hours or more. - Ask for paid trips back home about once per quarter (for holidays, family functions, vacations, etc.). Also ask that you may have the option of fying someone to visit you (girlfreind, sister, friend, whoever) in lieu of you flying home for one of the quarterly trips. - The cost of living is very high. The cost of food is high. I would ask for a daily meal allowance of $60 or more. As far as expenses, I would ask for a daily allowance - usually called a "per diem" - rather than actual expenses. If you have to submit actual expenses you will need to save and submit just about every receipt which can be tedious. I would recommend keeping receipts in a shoe box though in case anyone challenges your actual expenses, which WILL BE high in Hong Kong. - Where you live is very important. Apartments are very expensive, even in the outlying areas. I would recommend you stay downtown in "central" area at one of the International Hotels that have apartments. I recommend the Conrad (Hilton) Hotel ( http://conradhotels1.hilton.com/en/ch/brandServices.do?service=residences ). The Grand Hyatt, Peninsula, Four Seasons, Shangri-La and JW Marriot are all very nice too. Most have very nice apartments, and most of the people at these places speak English so that will be a big help. If you will be working in Kowloon (north, across water from Central) the Intercontinental is high class. Choose your location, don't let someone choose it for you. Hong Kong is huge, you could get stuck many miles outside of the city. - The transportation system is very good. Ask for a fully funded "octopus" card ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus_Card )which will allow you to take any train or bus anywhere, and pay for expenses. Forget about driving - they drive on the wrong (left) side of the road and traffic is horrible. If you have some clout, and are midlevel and up, it is common for people to ask for a car and driver. Don't laugh - it is common. This is especially useful if your commute will be long, if you will be entertaining clients frequently or traveling to client offices. The driver will also help you navigate about the city.

The game will work as the PS3 can play any region games. As far as the language it depends on the video game, check with your supplier.
2 :
ps3 games are all non regional - i would imagine you would have english as an option at least but it could be that it is in chinese/cantonese whatever initially.
3 :
Normally it's in chinese. I bought some games but faiiiil. -.- but you can check with the store your buying them from.
4 :
OMG FIRST SOUTH AFRICA IVE MET ON YAHOO!!! I used to live in knysna, western cap close to George and Plett ^^. I dont suggest buying ps3 games from there because I remember buying ps2 games and you neeed a special chip to play them >>" And of course they are going to be in chinese because imagine they sell english games in a Chinese speaking country I dont think the natives will be very happy XD So Yes dot risk it. WOW stll amazed I moved from SA to Belgium and Ireally miss it :) Well I hope this help and have fun in HONG KONG Hope thi is the best answer :)
5 :
ps3 is not region encoded so any game from any region will work on any ps3, but as of language, you need to make sure that the game supports multi-language and most games from hong kong are in japanese so i might ask the seller before purchasing anything.

Hi! Should do I would think - but I would suggest getting the WII softmodded as you would then be able to install apps such as Backup Launcher Gamma and GeckoOS which would let you region free your WII enabling you to play UK or any other region games on it.

Do Phones from Hong Kong work on tmobile

Do Phones from Hong Kong work on tmobile?
So I’m about to go visit Hong Kong and I was thinking about buying a new cell phone while I’m there since they’re cheaper and have a greater variety, but how do I know whether or not they will work when I get back to the US. I know it’s not as simple as placing the sim card in the new phone. I am on the t mobile network. Any advice or tips will be very helpful.

Actually, it *is* "as simple as placing the SIM card in the new phone." A HK phone that uses a SIM card will work on U.S. networks that also use SIM cards. Your biggest concern is getting an adapter for your charger that will fit in North American wall sockets. Those are cheap and sold everywhere. You shouldn't have to worry about getting one that converts voltage. All cellphones I've seen can be charged in either a 110V or 220V socket.

Nope. They are like dvds. They have different regions of games and will not work on your PS3 unless you bring one over from China or you have to modify your PS3 and I've heard that it's extremely hard to do.
2 :
Yes. PS3 games are not region locked so no matter where the disc is from it will play on any PS3. So yes they will work on your PS3.
3 :
??? is wrong...Ps3 games are region free meaning u can play any ps3 game's on your console that is from another country....SO YES YOU CAN PLAY YOUR GAME ...........XD HAPPY GAMING !
4 :
Yes, PS3 games are not region locked. That is why people order games from japan since sometimes they get games earlier.

Does the 80GB Playstation 3 from hong kong work in Australia

Does the 80GB Playstation 3 from hong kong work in Australia?
Basically if I was to buy a 80GB Playstation 3 from overseas (Hong Kong or Japan) would it play the australian Playstation 2 games and DVDs?

I dont think so. Because PS2 games that work on PS3 Hongkong is Region NTSC-J. I am quite sure that Australia PS2 games is PAL, right? But if you have PS2 games that has NTSC-J, u can play it. or simply dont sell your old PS2 console. I bet u already knew the answer since u have already bought it, haven't u? :) Have a nice time with your new PS3! And add my PSN id: squall_edd -est-
2 :
Any Ps3 game should work on the ps3 because it is region free. But the ps3 has backwards computability issues, so not all or any ps1 or ps2 games will work. Still it looks like Sony has a lot of problems to fix out of that over heating piece of hardware. The link below will explain more to you. glancing at the chart under "Retail Configurations" it should be fine because it will use an emulation software to run it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3
3 :
yes it can

All Playstation 3 games are region-free. The only problem with your PS3 from Hong Kong is that it may not be able to play DVDs, CDs, or Blu-Rays that aren't the same Region Code as that PS3. All games from the world should work fine, though.

Would a Classic Controller for Wii from Hong Kong work here in the USA

Would a Classic Controller for Wii from Hong Kong work here in the USA?
I bought a classic controller a while ago from Ebay, but I did not notice that it was being shipped from Hong Kong. Now, I know that due to region coding many games can not be played here from Japan and such and that electronic items are sometimes configured differently in different countries and I'm just worried that this classic controller may be like that. So will this controller work with my American Wii and Wii remote?

Wii Controllers are not region locked like the games are. Classic Controllers and Wii Remotes have the same plugs and inputs worldwide.

Lol Yes, most of our consumer goods are made in China. But ya...
2 :
I believe they would. The only difference would be in games. Meaning that some games from Japan (for instance) won't work on a US 360.
3 :
i bought a pink 1 from hong kong of ebay for £22,00 brand new! and it works, they have stuff cheaper. is the games that don't work accessories work world wide
4 :
The controllers will be the same. Only the region code on the box and the games are different.
5 :
Yes, I would assume that they work as most gaming accessories seem to be pretty universal, and will work on most worldwide bought consoles. I would not see any reason as to why it is unable to, no cords or wires are such are necessary, and with it being wireless, it'd seem more likely to work.

Will a phone that works in Hong Kong work in India

Will a phone that works in Hong Kong work in India?
I have a phone that works in Hong Kong and Taiwan when you purchase a local SIM card. Will this phone work in India? Is it cheaper to use a local cell phone in India or just use a calling card, if calling to the USA? How available are public phones? I will be traveling to Bangalore, Mysore, New Delhi, and Agra.

Normally the fones using SIM card in Hong Kong will work in India for sure. But be sure to take the ADAPTER to plug in your fone's charger in India. You can get this adapter for 5 $ in Chungking mansion. If you want to call US from India, using your cell fone or VOIP services. Lot and Lot of private STD/ISD booths are available throught the nation and you can use them for your International calls.
2 :
GSM quad (4) band phone with international roaming will work in India. Else, you can use a local sim card in India. Make sure your phone is network unlocked in Hong Kong before you try switching sims of another cellular provider.
3 :
Use VOIP services or buy calling card. You can see both options here: http://calling-cards-international.com/
4 :
Public phones are available at PCOs.The phone will work but the sim may not depending on the type of sim such as that of Hutch (roaming) For cheaper calls use local sim.
5 :
. Hong Kong cell phone should work in India. Use a local sim card AirTel / Vodophone (Hutch) for local calls and international. I think AirTel is charging about 7 to 8 Rupees per minute to call U.S. from India. There are few centers to call on VoIP. You will find plenty of public calling telephone booths in every nook and corners of India to make local and internation calls. Here they will charge you about Rupees TEN for a minute to make an international call. While using the cell phone for local calling, please be aware of roaming charges. B'coz you will be moving around in different states of India. FYI: Bangalore/ Mysore, New Delhi, and Agra are located in three different states of India. Have a nice stay in India. .
