You only need a Visit/tourist VISA. There is a multiple entry VISA that is valid for 1 or 2 years, and you can enter China for multiple times. As long as you don't need to overstay, and you are not planning to work in China. This should be good for you.

Most travel agent will not handle USA passports USA passports can not get a visa at the Lowu border USA passports can not get the special 5-day Shenzhen visa. The visa office in Wanchai is for you the place to go. OK, longest visa is 6 month, but if you are a permanent HK resident you can apply for a 3 year visa - or apply for an APEC business traveller card that also lasts for 3 years.
